Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

Easily one of the most anticipated and hyped albums of 2013, the title of Daft Punk’s newest album, Random Access Memories, might lead one to believe that the music contained within is as powerful as the computer hardware that inspired it.

While the power of RAM has roughly doubled every year, so has the hype and reputation surrounding Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter. The same cannot be said about the frequency of their musical output.

Excluding their underwhelming soundtrack for TRON, Random Access Memories is the duo’s first album in eight years.

“I really like Daft Punk’s new album,” said Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger in a recent interview for Vancouver’s 94.5 The Beat FM.

“In fact, it reminds me a bit of my own songwriting. It’s something that would definitely get played at The Gap or maybe even Home Depot, and in that regard our music isn’t so different,” Kroeger continued.

“Don’t get me wrong, I think disco is a bit fluffy and I would never listen to it for pleasure, but I have a lot of respect for artists setting out two or three rules for all the songs on an album and never breaking out of that mold…it’s not something everyone can do successfully.”

While Random Access Memories is indeed a different direction for Daft Punk, they haven’t lost the loyal admiration of Kanye West, who has already asked for permission to use a one hour and fourteen-minute sample from the album for his own new side project, Fast Dunk.
