CHICAGO - Two years ago, Brian Wilms graduated from DeVry community college in Chicago, moving forward with a degree in Business Administration and a passionate hunger to start his own business. Over the last twenty-four months, Brian has saved the majority of his wages as an IT call centre representative to make his entrepreneurial ambitions come to life.
“I am really excited to start my own business, I know it will be a lot of work, but the pay off of running my own successful enterprise would be extremely gratifying, both financially and emotionally,” says Brian.
“I’ve been doing a lot of research over the last year, and I really think there’s a rapidly growing market for niche electronic-music themed restaurants.”
Brian, who listens primarily to Feist, Broken Social Scene, and Vampire Weekend, recently started a thread on electronic music magazine Resident Advisor’s forums under the title of “Who Knows The Most About Tech House?”
Brian believes that this thread, which has quickly developed into a number of RA regulars debating the philosophical essence of tech house and what constitutes its defining features, will provide him with the essential knowledge necessary to kick start his restaurant.
“I’m really making a conscious effort to have the music compliment the food that will be served at the restaurant; the flavours will be slow to develop, but — much like tech house — they will engulf you in a sea of accents once they reach their peak,” Brian explains.
While Brian admits that he is not the most well-versed in the science of tech house, he has been deliberately posting incorrectly in the thread to spark discussion that will provide him with the information he needs.
“The last post I made for example, was a link to Jennifer Lopez’ song ‘Live It Up,’ but I simply pasted the link with a comment asking, ‘if there were no vocals in this and it wasn’t so poppy wouldn’t it be considered tech house?’ And while I know this is slightly off-base, many distraught commenters aggressively listed hundreds of reasons why that song would not be considered tech house, unknowingly providing me with all of the information I need for my new business.”
Brian hopes to open his new restaurant in the winter months of 2013. He is currently renovating a space and equipping it with large Behringer speakers because he was told “Behringer is the best speaker brand for listening to tech house.”
